While Stavanger is mostly known as a center for the oil-industry in the Southwest of Norway, the city and its surroundings also are a rapidly growing tourism destination. It has grand nature, including steep mountains (e.g. the world renowned Preikestolen), wide stretched beaches and green valleys. This makes Stavanger an excellent starting point for an active holiday, be it on the water or on land.

In addition the region is known for its excellent cuisine, with Stavanger becoming the first Norwegian city outside of the capital to receive a Michelin star restaurant in 2016. The city is a former capital of culture (2008) and currently hosts over 30 festivals annually.
